Case Study

The case study featured here includes my work for Naomi's Village, a children's home in Kenya. It required the use of multiple disciplines within a short period of time and involved an exciting, eye-opening, and unique trip to Africa.

Naomi's Village was founded by Bob and Julie Mendonsa, two North Texans who took yearly trips to Kenya, where Bob worked as a volunteer orthopedic surgeon.

I became involved with the home through my employer, who was both a sponsor and a volunteer. Naomi's Village needed a new logo and website, one that would make it easier to sponsor the children at the home. (Sponsorships help pay for their clothing, education, food, etc.) With only a small window of time, conceptualization, design, and coding would have to be done quickly.

While working on the project, I was fortunate to be invited to Kenya to visit Naomi's Village and meet the staff and volunteers, as well as the children. Another reason for my visit was to capture portraits of the children. (More about that below.)

The Naomi's Village logo is inspired by and based on the acacia tree, or "umbrella thorn," which is found in many parts of Africa. It's an important symbol of resiliency, as it can tolerate a variety of soils and withstand extreme environmental conditions like heat and drought, and even frost.

For the website's color scheme, I chose colors that were representative of Africa. The updated website is more colorful, modern, and less convoluted and visually cluttered than the previous one. The paths the user follows were simplified, making it easier to donate to Naomi's Village's projects and fundraisers. The process to sponsor a child was also streamlined.

On my visit to Kenya, I photographed the home and its children, as well as areas throughout Kenya. Photographs would be used in marketing materials and for Art for Hope, an annual fundraiser held in Texas that helps raise funds for Naomi's Village. The fundraiser features a mixture of artwork, including paintings, photography, and mixed media projects for auction.
